There is nothing nicer in the world than going to your favourite restaurant for your favourite food. I love going out to restaurants full stop and have eaten out in many fine ones across the world, but when I get a chance to spend a few days at home in Sligo I always try to have a meal out with my wife, Gillian, in Trá Bán in Strandhill. It’s just the perfect place to relax and unwind.
The food is amazing and the atmosphere is so cosy and tranquil, with stunning views of the seafront. The name Trá Bán is gaelic for White Strand, the beautiful, unspoiled beach alongside the restaurant. I’ve been going there for over a year now, ever since it opened in July 2009 and I can say that it’s the classiest restaurant I’ve eaten in. The attention to detail is sheer perfection and this restaurant prides itself in using local suppliers so freshness is guaranteed.
It’s hard to say what my favourite dishes are as I honestly love everything, but if I was pushed I’d say The Kattaifi King Prawns for starters, with sweet chilli jam. For main, the Reef on Beef (fillet steak with Mullaghmore lobster tail) always hits the spot and the Nice but Naughty Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake is to die for. The staff make you feel special the minute you arrive – Cedric always provides a warm welcome.
The decor is beautiful and subtle candle light makes evening dining so cosy and relaxing. The Westlife lads also love this place and when we’re all together in Sligo we always try to pop in for a bite. But the most important this about Trá Bán is its location – just above The Strand Bar, one of my favourite pubs where you can have plenty of craic and a few sneaky pints of the black stuff before or after. It’s a must if visiting Sligo!
